Best Review:

When you think about watching ‘Bad Santa’ with the kids, but remember that in addition to booze, smoking and sex, there’s also three-story swearing, you realize that ‘Fatman’ is a great alternative. If you take ‘Real Love’ for one point of ‘unconventional Christmas spirit’, ‘Bad Santa’ for ten points, and ‘Home Alone’ for five points, then ‘Fatman’ would be right between the latter two.

The story of how one spoiled little asshole ‘ordered’ a killer Santa blossoms in the cynical world of this movie, where Santa himself (Mel Gibson) is a rather over-aged man who’s tired of Christmas being just a marketing slate to sell consumer society goods.

The postmodernism of the jokes shoots from all guns, from Santa having to mend occasional bullet wounds received from overly vigilant zealots of the sanctity of private territory, to jokes about producing goods at the expense of child labor, all the way to imposing a contract with the US Army to keep himself out of business.

That said, on the one hand, the texture is pretty harsh in places – there are a couple of two-second scenes with very natural arterial blood fountains, removing which would recommend watching this from the age of twelve (and so – rated 18+ and R). On the other hand, the magic of miracles has not been removed from the movie – there are real elves, and Santa really knows who was good and who was bad, and in general there are enough miracles in the movie. But the miracles are of their own kind, with balls, stubble, and the smell of bad breath.

The one thing the movie lacked to stand on a pedestal on par with other Christmas movies every year and not just this year is the uncertainty of the genre. For a family comedy, there are too dark and gory parts here, and for a cynical satire, it’s too bland.

Nevertheless, it’s a great movie to laugh and relax after a busy year – the movie’s protagonist’s utter arrogance will clearly resonate with many, and hope for miracles will get some soul-saving fodder in its bowl for once. After watching it, you feel better – and that’s the main thing.
